AI Now Cited More and More as Major Layoffs Announced

Oct 29, 2025 | Posted by Jeff Weil | Commercial Real Estate, Commercial Tenant Improvement Contractor, National Economu, Office Space, Real Estate Landlords, The Office Market, Tips for Tenants, Trends, Trends for Office Tenants, Workspace, World Economy |

FastCompany 10/28/25 reporting on Amazon announcing 14,000 layoffs, citing AI innovation, “While the memo makes clear that artificial intelligence is ushering in rapid changes that will result in leaner operations, an Amazon source said that AI was not behind the vast majority of the layoffs.”  These are not warehouse layoffs but ’corporate workforce’ employees who will now be job-hunting. This comes after Target announced 1,800 corporate layoffs, as did Salesforce in recent months. “Salesforce recently announced major layoffs, including a significant reduction of approximately 4,000 jobs in its customer support division, which CEO Marc Benioff attributed to the efficiency of AI-powered agents. The company stated that the AI system, AgentForce, has led to fewer support cases, eliminating the need to backfill many roles.”  When these AI-induced layoff s are added to companies getting more done with less workers in the office, the end result is a lot less need for corporate office space. In my opinion we are just at the forefront of this phenomenon, and just like the agricultural revolution forced huge numbers of to find other industries, and the computer may have eliminated millions of clerical jobs,  entire new industries were created and those proactive employees who could see this coming ended up just fine…easy for me to say, but not sure being an office leasing specialist these days is the golden ticket…
