California, Here We Go Away…

Apr 13, 2026 | Posted by Jeff Weil | Bay Area Housing, Califorina Business, California Economics, San Franciisco, U.S. Economics |

By Don Sweeney The Sacramento Bee    “They are not mostly fleeing to Texas, despite memes and advertisements touting it as an alternative to California. The top beneficiaries of Californians seeking their fortunes elsewhere are Nevada, Hawaii, Oregon, Arizona, Idaho and Washington, the study found. Other states benefiting from the California exodus include Colorado, Montana, Utah, Alaska, Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas, Virginia, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee and Florida. But California showed a net gain of people relocating to the state from Washington, D.C., Massachusetts and New York,  the average person leaving California relocates to a community where monthly housing costs are $672 lower than in the community they left, the study found.”  Now if many more millions were able to leave California perhaps our housing costs would go down…and folks in less expensive regions are blown away by this: “Residents making an annual income of up to $109,700 who are living in Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties are considered low income, according to the California Department of Housing & Community Development. May 20, 2025.”
